GREETING FROM MONSIGNOR JOHN P. FOLEY, PRESIDENT OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS, AT THE SECOND MEETING OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE FOR THE GLOBAL CATHOLIC TELEVISION CONVENTION AT ST CHARLES’ PALACE, THE VATICAN, ON 20 JANUARY 2006

My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord

Thank you for accepting our request to help us plan the Global Catholic Television Convention.

As you will have noted, one of the problems on a global level is that although – God be thanked – there are many Catholic television initiatives, there is a lack programming resources and specialised staff to keep them up and running.

The coordination and cooperation issues would appear to have been solved. In accordance with our universal responsibility as the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, we have decided that it would be a good idea to respond to the worldwide demand for the creation of a forum in order to plan and help to achieve coordination and collaboration.

Unfortunately, if the effort we put into this task lacks quality and professionalism, our beliefs will appear to be of little value and paradoxically, we would present a poor image of God.

My philosophy is that we should offer God nothing but the best. This does not mean that we are always capable of achieving supreme quality, but is does mean that we should always try to.

In no sector is a network of collaboration more important than in television, in order to enable the programming to be offered all over the world, to create an international structure for professional training and to share ideas and programmes.

Fifty years ago, when I was a university student, one of the courses in religion that I studied most keenly was Pope Pious XII’s encyclical letter “Mystici Corporis”.

We are all members of a single Body of Christ, each good thing we do helps the whole Body and the whole Church; each unpleasant or mediocre deed we commit out could damage the whole Body of Christ and the whole Church.

It is important, therefore, that all the members of the Mystical Body work together under a single head, Jesus Christ, and his Vicar, the Successor to St Peter, the visible head of the Church and our Holy Father.

I hope that our project and the planned convention will be a great help to Catholic television stations and will emerge as a sort of “nervous system” for the Church that will contribute information and energy, and will also mobilise the Body of Christ that is the Church in perfect unity, in order to continue with the evangelisation work, proclaiming Christ as the way, the truth and the life.

I thank you once again for all that you are doing and will do in the future.
